After 20 years as MA's Music Director, Bob Schleeter set out to document the experience, and champion one of his favorites causes - meaningful, student-driven music education.

Thefirst article was written for the Berklee College of Music Alumini magazine, Berklee Today, and is titled A Model for the Next Millennium.

Thesecond article was written for Marin Academy's annual magazine, NEXUS, and focuses on our Advanced Jazz Ensemble's trip to Boston for the Berklee College of Music Jazz Festival, and seeks to illustrate the point that the magic happens when students take ownership.

Sax greatMel Martin played with Dizzy for two years, as well as James Brown, BB King and many others

PercussionistRachael Bouch-Dimonstein graduated from the program in the mid-nineties and has made extended trips to Cuba and Spain to study. Her group, Locura is based in the East Bay.

Other MA regular coaches include Steve Riffkin (keyboards, vocal harmonies) Richard Leiter (keyboards), Susie Davis (keyboards, vocal harmonies), Rita Lackey (vocals) Teerth Gonzalez (drums and percussion), Robbie Belgrade (drums and percussion), and Cayce Carnahan (trumpet).

Past workshop presenters include Zakir Hussain (master tabla player from North India), Tom Johnston (guitarist, vocalist and songwriter for The Doobie Brothers), Roy Rodgers (Delta blues guitar), Mel Martin, Samuka Bahia (Brazilian capoiera and samba), Edgardo Cambón (Latin percussion) and Andres Condon-Vial (Chilean singer-songwriter).
